What Is Osaka Festival Fringe?

Festival Fringe is coming to Tennoji / Abeno, Osaka.
The Festival Fringe has over 70 years of history in Edinburgh, Scotland, and now the world-renowned festival is coming to Osaka.
The modern Abeno area is full of recreation facilities, such as Abeno Harukas and Abeno Q’s Mall. On the other hand, the neighbouring Tennoji area is dotted with historical buildings, including Shitennoji and Isshin-ji, and also many facilities for families with children such as Ten-Shiba, Tennoji Park and Tennoji Zoo. More importantly, there are many small theaters (50-300 seats) and open spaces within 1 kilometer of Tennoji. So as you can see even though the Tennoji / Abeno area is part of a bustling city hub, it is still well suited to hold a festival.

The biggest feature of any Festival Fringe are the Awards. As a matter of fact, Edinburgh Festival Fringe has produced many performers who are now performing worldwide.
We at the Osaka Festival Fringe also provide not only the chance to be featured in media such as newspaper and magazines, but also Awards which are unique to this area. As your first step to the next stage, or as the latest page in your long history, we’re looking forward to your participation.

Overview

The Osaka Festival Fringe

Entertainment in Osaka is a fusion of “influencing, moving, and entertaining people” with “expressiveness”. Dotonbori, which is a good example, is full of theaters specializing in many genres including Kabuki, Bunraku (Japanese puppet theatre), Rakugo (Japanese traditional storytelling), jazz, revue, movies and so on. The streets bristle with banner-flags featuring actors’ and comedians’ names, and are always crowded with people. This is the very thing we aim for, this is exactly what we mean by “Festival City”. We aim to create a thriving city where not only arts but also business flourish by making use of the city’s local attractiveness. We proceed with this project to bring the people who are involved together, and make this whole city its venue.
The Festival Fringe was held for the first time in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. Artists would have paid a registration fee to the Fringe Organization, and signed contracts directly with the theaters. Today, the Edinburgh Fringe is the biggest theatre festival is the world, with over 25,000 participants every year. The most incredible features are that everyone can particulate regardless of their size or scale and the cost-benefit for performances is fairly high. In Edinburgh 2 festivals, called “Edinburgh International Festival” and “Edinburgh Festival Fringe”, are held during the summer season. Each of them are sponsored by different organizations, but this makes Edinburgh a city full of arts every summer since there are huge numbers of shows held together at the same time. Moreover, street performers/comedians also perform in the streets and open spaces. We’d like to make this happens here in Osaka too, and make this already thriving city even moreso.

Osaka Festival Fringe’s 3 Basic Stances

Concept

We promote Osaka Festival Fringe approaches in order to energise the entire town following these 3 basic ideas:

● Proceed with the project by collaborating with local theaters, stores and restaurants, and have as many people as possible involved in this Festival with the aim of producing positive effects both economically and socially.

● Create a coordinating mechanism between Performing Arts and food culture in Osaka. In terms of this city’s features, food culture is a must since Osaka is also known as the “Food Capital” of Japan.

● Promote internationalization through Performing Arts. As a means of achieving “influencing, moving, and entertaining people”, we want to connect inbound tourists and this city with cross-cultural interaction.

Entertainment

- discover appeals of performing/expressing -

Entertainment is a fusion of “influencing, moving, and entertaining people” and “expressiveness”, and has an ability to fascinate people. Representation is one aspect of culture we are invested in, and we would love to associate it with entertainment as a method of community development.

Artists

- Visualize the spaces for performing -

Recent years, the number of spaces to perform is increasing as technology advances. Now you can express yourself not only on stage but also through SNS. Although this makes it easier for people to experience the arts, it can also isolate audiences. So we encourage first hand experience of performing arts by holding this intensive festival.

Entertainment and city

- Creation of Festival City -

We’ would love for this Osaka Festival Fringe to be a chance to create a lively and flourishing city in Osaka, where everyone can have meals, shopping and a pleasant chat before the curtain-up, during the intermission, or after the show.

Awards

Edinburgh Fringe Festival has produced many performers who are now performing worldwide. Award is one of the step to perform globally.

Osaka Fringe Festival will have Award (criticism) which is the biggest feature of Fringe Festival for the participants in cooperation with Public Interest Incorporated Association International Theatre Institute (ITI/UNESCO), Japan Center, and media including newspapers and magazines.
And we’d like to award following prizes to participants who did outstanding performance.

● ITI International Theatre Institute Award
● Theater Award (from each theaters)
● Media Award (L Maga.jp, Newspapers, Radio, Pia, TV)
● Mayor Award / Borough President Award (currently in negotiation)

In addition, we’re considering adding for more categories of Award such as Criticism Award or Tanimachi Award (Restaurants and shopping districts can give an award to the performers on their own judgement). Furthermore, launching a discount system named “Fringe Discount” which can be used at stores in the area during the festival is also under review.

※We will keep you updated for more details about Awards here in this website.
